Client Story — Read on how we helped a client who retired early to manage his finances

This week we are going to share a client story with you. Read on to find out how we helped Sameer manage his finances for early retirement.

Sameer (name changed) is a seasoned professional in the Oil & Gas sector and had worked all his life to support his family. As a sole-bread winner he had never taken a day off, until he was 55 years old and decided he wanted to retire early. Sameer came to us to check if he
can work for fun instead of money. We had to ensure that he has enough assets to cover his expenses for a lifetime!

Sameer openly shared all his assets. We noticed that 75% of his assets were in properties, 10% in Provident Fund and only 15% liquid in mutual funds and shares. He also had a loan for his daughter’s education abroad worth 5% of his net worth. This did not bother him, but
it came up in every conversation as money borrowed is at a certain rate of interest and the mind is always calculating that outflow in the background.

Like many, the property purchases were made with the idea of long-term appreciation. However, the best rate of return earned by property in India is 8%. When we told him he could earn much more handsome returns in stocks and mutual funds, he immediately went on a selling spree to rid himself of assets he would never use. Sameer’s only child – his daughter too had decided to live out of India by then and would have no interest in the properties he had accumulated. 
Sameer travelled across the country to sell his property as the paperwork is all physical and one has to meet the buyer, unlike in the stock market where there is uniform and anonymous settlement of trades. He would get offers for cash transactions, which caused him more heart burn as that money would not make its way back to the stock market to be invested and compounded.

Today, Sameer is on his way to converting 60% of his networth to mutual funds and equity which provide easy liquidity for his and his wife’s day-to-day expenses. He continues to keep few urban properties on rent where he sees better appreciation in value. He is confident of
paying off his daughter’s student loan before she finishes her education. He enjoys playing golf three times a week and doing freelance consulting work for the remaining four days in the week.
